Spinel

For centuries, red spinels were mistaken for rubies because the two gemstones are often found together and share a similar fiery colour. Some of the world’s most famous “rubies” were later identified as spinels including the Black Prince’s Ruby in the British Imperial State Crown. 

Spinel appears in an impressive range of colours, including vivid red, pink, orange, lavender, purple, blue, grey and black. Colourless spinel also occurs but is rare. Red and vibrant pink stones are especially admired, while cobalt-blue spinel is highly sought after for its intense and unusual colour.
